Royal Blue Tang

Paracanthurus hepatus

The royal blue tang, also known as the regal tang or blue tang, is a medium-sized fish that typically grows to be around 8-10 inches in length. It has a distinctive blue-colored body with a yellow tail and fins, and a black band running horizontally across its body.

They are part of the family Acanthuridae, which includes a number of different species of tangs and surgeonfish known for their distinctive, sharp-edged scales.

The royal blue tang can be found in the tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, including locations such as the Red Sea, the Maldives, and the Great Barrier Reef.

They are commonly found in shallow reefs and lagoons, where they can be seen swimming among the coral and other marine life.

The blue tang’s diet consists primarily of algae and other plant matter, which it grazes on throughout the day. It is an herbivorous fish and will sometimes pick at the algae growing on the coral reefs where it lives.

Like many other species of fish, the blue tang is a social creature and can often be found swimming in large groups or schools. They are also highly active, constantly moving and exploring their surroundings in search of food.

The royal blue tang belongs to the genus Acanthurus and the family Acanthuridae, which includes other species of tangs and surgeonfish.

It is a popular fish in the aquarium trade, although it is important to provide it with a large enough tank to accommodate its size and the need to swim in schools.

Overall, the royal blue tang is a beautiful and fascinating fish that plays an important role in the coral reef ecosystem.

They are a valuable species for both scientific study and for the enjoyment of marine life enthusiasts, and their striking blue color and unique anatomy make them a standout in the underwater world.
