Japanese Angelshark

Squatina Japonica

Average Length – 5ft but is the largest and can reach 6.5ft.

Japanese Angelsharks have a a set of sharp (small) spines on their back called “mid-back thorns” which is something other Angelsharks do not have. 

Northwest Pacific Ocean and Sea of Japan.
 

These Sharks are bottom-dwellers.
They live on the ocean floor and bury themselves under the sand to hide from their prey. They can typically be found over sandy bottom areas near reefs.

Small fish, Ground Fish, Crustaceans and Cephalopods.
They like to patrol in small circles close to the ocean floor near to other Angelsharks, but they don’t tend to form close-knit groups.

They are harmless to humans unless provoked.

Japanese Angelsharks live on the ocean floor and buries themselves under the sand to hide from their prey.

They are considered “critically-endangered” due to being fished for their meat and skin which can be made into a specific kind of leather called “Shagreen.”
